Holiday Coffee & Hot Cocoa Bar...Easy and under $7!

So we have all seen various pics depicting inviting and inspiring coffee and hot cocoa stations. I so want that!  It's the holidays!...I love and need coffee and hot cocoa, and who wouldn't want to have their very own coffee shop at home. Plus, what a cool way to impress family and friends during your holiday gathering!   But with so much going on this season, I just don't have the time to recreate these images exactly the way they appear.   Basically, I want what they have but a little simpler and budget friendly.

Whenever i get inspired to do some decorating I survey my home to see if there is anything being unused that needs a more current use. I was looking for a food tray in my kitchen to  use, but I remembered this silver tray that I had in my bedroom.  I got this from my favorite store Homegoods, two years ago.   Looks pretty, but no true purpose in my bedroom.  Let's give this tray a real job!

Next I needed containers.  Something to hold all my goodies.  I looked in my pantry and couldn't find anything empty.   So made a quick trip to the Dollar Store and I purchased these glass jars and containers.  Five for $5....and they actually look pretty good.  I didn't have nice labels to add, but maybe another time.  I'm doing simple today.

For some holiday decor, I also grabbed two dollar store poinsettias and grabbed some pine cones I had in another room.

I filled the Dollar Store containers with cocoa powder, Swiss Miss hot cocoa packs, marshmallows, cream cups, coffee stirrers, and of course tea.  For many of us, these items are staples in our homes.

I also love how Pinterest, images display coffee/hot cocoa stations with a beautifully framed chalk board, with the quote, "Baby it's cold outside."   Remember I'm being thrifty, so I used the same dollar store tray that I actually painted with black chalkboard paint last thanksgiving for a menu sign.   Not the best print, we used my daughters chunky sidewalk chalk.

Well, my daughter and I are going to the coffee and hot cocoa bar to get some hot cocoa!  Thanks for stopping by and Have a Happy Happy Holiday!

Christmas Holiday Decor Ideas!

Happy Holidays and Welcome to A Pretty House Rocks!   This is my family's favorite time of the year and we couldn't wait to take out the Christmas decorations.  Please....take a look around and thanks for stopping by!

This year we decided to decorate our tree with silver and gold accented with blue in the family room.  I just love the color blue, but I must admit that the colors gold and silver looks pretty good.

Ahh the fireplace, my favorite feature of my family room.  I didn't have enough stocking holders this year.  We got a new puppy so now we have 4 kids!  So I improvised by using a tension rod.  I placed the tension rod on the holders allowing room to add more stockings as needed.   (see below)

Best idea ever!

Isn't he the cutest thing!

For my dining room below, I used some silver burlap as a runner and blue poinsettias from Joann's Fabric store.  This year is using the "less is more" design theme in my dining room since we will be painting soon (Can't wait!)

Below are some more stems from Joann's and Michael's.   I love the way these winter stems bring in the Holiday!

I made these wreaths below for every window in my house.  Costs $2 a window!  I bought the wreathes and red bows from the dollar store.  So easy and quite festive.   That looks really beautiful from the street.

I decorated one of my console tables with Christmas decor and ornaments and also used this table to display greeting cards.

Thanks for visiting A Pretty House Rocks and Happy Holidays!

2 Story Family Room Easy Paint Idea....No Scaffold Required!

Is your 2 story family room a spacious and beautiful painting nightmare?   I used to love the idea of having a 2 story open floor plan and all that... yada yada.  It's nice, but I've been having the most difficult time with painting the walls, because honestly I like to do my own painting...and who can paint a 2 story room without a scaffold?   I'm 5'2" ain't happening!  So I improvised, and after visiting a model home I decided to try a little strategic painting.

See here is the Before family room with plain white walls.

And here is the After with my new paint....I really think it turned out great.  I've been on a mission to change the color tones of my home and chose Mindful gray from Sherwin Williams.  Absolutely Love It !!!!!!!

I taped and I painted half the wall, and added a painted wide stripe to the top. It really looks decorative, and I was able to get away with painting half the wall without it looking silly. No one will ask, "why did you paint half the wall?"   No reason to.

I taped the wall very carefully in three rows, leaving a wide space in between. Kind of tedious, but thankfully there wasn't a lot of wall to tackle.  I also used my husbands level to make straight lines.

It couldn't have turned out better.  I can't wait to add curtains!

Here (Below) is a before pic of the other wall before I painted.

And here (Below) is an after pic...I painted the same pattern on this side, to balance out the room.

I love how this turned out, I hope this inspires you to use paint as a design element!  Thanks for visiting!

Fall Decor for the Fireplace and Family Room

A Pretty House

The month of October is undeniably the beginning of the holiday decorating season...

...AND I just love an excuse to decorate for the holidays...any holiday really....but there's just something about the winter holidays.  This year I wanted to add some silver decor ...something a little different for me for the fall season.   So I began with my fireplace and my family room.

A Pretty House

I used all my leaf garland on my dining room table, so I had to improvise by using these dollar store fall flowers to decorate the mantel.

I used candle holders and added big pretty pumpkins instead of candles.  To add some silver decor, my daughter and I spray painted these orange plastic pumpkins silver and white and while still wet, we sprinkled some silver glitter.  We loved the way they turned out!  Plus my daughter was dying to use that glitter on something!  There's no losing with spray paint!

I got these fall leaves from Michael's last year...they are so vibrant and they look so real!

Craft Organization and Storage, How I found Space!

Coat Closet and Craft Storage

YES!  Craft organization...but in a coat closet?

Many of us just don't have an extra room to call our dedicated craft room, but that shouldn't stop our productivity.  Sure enough, a lack of organization can do just that. I've grown tired of using one of my kitchen cabinets and other random places for craft storage.   I was also tired of going to the garage to retrieve my hot glue gun.   So I pondered areas in my home to create the storage I needed, and settled on my coat closet.  This waste of space was the perfect answer.

Coat Closet/Craft Storage
This has been a huge life saver for me.  I purchased two 3-drawer plastic storage containers from Kmart, and labeled them with Indenta-Label Storage labels.  No it's not the Martha Stewart Craft table and drawers that I've always dreamed of, but it makes my life so much easier.   I don't have to search my home for various craft items...I just check the coat closet!

For instance, when one of my kids has a class project that requires some crafting...I just roll these bad boys to our kitchen table.

I keep those extra crayons and colored pencils in a drawer so that my kids are always prepared.  I swear my daughter's crayons in her room are always either broken or have disappeared!

Wrapping Paper and Gift Bag Storage
DIY Storage boxes

I cut bottom half of cereal boxes and wrapped then in cheap wrapping paper as DIY storage boxes.

I used a Dollar Store Waste Basket to store wrapping paper and gift bags.

These drawers are the perfect spot to store my acrylic paints and supplies.  I just roll out this storage bin whenever I feel a painting project coming on!

There's always a way to improve your home organization and decor, even when you don't have a lot of space or a huge budget, all you need is an idea.

Beige to Gray kitchen....time for a change!

I've been on a mission to update my home, room by room.... beige wall by beige wall.   I used to love the beige color but trends change and gray is the new "it" color.
But this "it" color has been quite a task to choose.  With gray paint I've learned that the choices are appealing yet come in abundance.  I'm going crazy trying to choose a single color!  I'm sure many of you are feeling the same way.   We have so much beige throughout the house that I'm growing impatient, I've been so anxious to begin and see the finished product.  But that's not how a good design project works.  You have to plan.

So let me regroup...I've decided that maybe a warm gray is the best course of action.  nd since fall is around the corner, what a perfect time to paint!
Before I started, I've been doing research on various gray paints.  I learned that I need to be careful about the undertones.  Some undertones are blue, some are purple, some are brown.  So I purchased some samples and have also been looking at other kitchens comparable to mines that have gray paint.

So below is my kitchen with the old beige and gold faux finish....was really nice in 2005...TEN YEARS AGO!   I purchased the popular Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter and Sherwin Williams Worldly Gray.
The Faux must go!

Below are some of those other kitchen's I've been comparing. There sure are some beautiful kitchens out there!   One day remodel my kitchen..but until then...let thine kitchen be thine canvas!

This paint below reminds me of BM's Revere Pewter...which I think I actually love!   This color color scheme is similar to mines...I think this could work.
